When Is It Time to Replace Your Home's Windows?

As a homeowner, you may not relish the idea of getting new windows for your home, since they can be very expensive and especially if you consider replacing all of them at one time. However, there are some very good reasons to update your windows as needed, some of which you may easily overlook. Note what is meant by this and when your home might be telling you that the windows need replacing.

When your home feels drafty or overly warm

Your home might feel drafty or stuffy because of poor insulation and holes or cracks in the building materials, but this also might signal that your home needs new windows. The window frames may have separated slightly from the home itself as your house shifted and settled over the years, or simply because the wood of the house expanded and contracted as it absorbed moisture and then dried out. In either case, this can mean leaks around the windows that are letting in cold air during the wintertime and warm air during summertime.

These leaks and drafts are more than uncomfortable; they often result in you turning up the air conditioner or the furnace so that you spend more on utilities through the years. Rather than continuing to waste this money or live in an uncomfortable space, you might consider replacing your home's windows.

Soundproofing

If a new freeway has been built near your home or it's located near any busy road, you may be bothered constantly by that sound; new windows can help. Today's windows are often built with better soundproofing abilities than ever before, as double glazed or triple glazed windows along with vinyl frames or another material that doesn't conduct sound very well can keep your home quiet and more comfortable overall.

To improve your home's resale value

If you're thinking of putting your home on the market, your real estate agent may suggest you upgrade your windows. Not only will they help to reduce a homeowner's energy bills as mentioned above, but new windows can also increase a home's curb appeal. Older windows with rotted sills or that are chipped and cracked can make your entire home look rundown and shabby, no matter the rest of its appearance. Even if you don't invest in the highest insulating factor for your new windows or upgraded features like tilt-in panes, just having new windows alone can often increase your home's resale value and get potential homebuyers through the front door.
